SPICED: Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event, Decision

SPICED was coined by Winning by Design and is a discovery framework for the initial engagement. It explores the situation, the specific problem, the business impact, a time-related trigger, and the decision-making process.

What SPICED Asks

  • Situation: the client’s current situation, without judgment.
  • Pain: the specific problem, as the client would describe it.
  • Impact: the business impact of this problem, expressed in numbers or consequences.
  • Critical Event: A time-sensitive trigger that makes a decision urgent.
  • Decision: How the decision-making process works within the client’s organization.

What SPICED Is Suited For

SPICED is well-suited for product-led growth teams and, in general, for initial contact in shorter sales cycles. Because it starts with the situation rather than the budget, the conversation remains empathetic and is more open-ended than interrogative.

Where SPICED Reaches Its Limits

SPICED does not explicitly assess either the budget or decision-making authority; both must be addressed as soon as a deal shows promise. For enterprise deals involving multiple decision-making levels and a formal procurement process, SPICED does not adequately reflect reality.

Application in the Quotaforge Qualification Stack

SPICED marks the beginning of our Heating phase, often combined with BANT for initial pre-qualification by SDRs. If a lead exhibits enterprise characteristics—such as multiple stakeholders, a volume exceeding €50k or a formal process—we train the team in an 8-week program to transition to MEDDIC or MEDDPICC during the Alloying phase.

Practical tip: A qualification framework is a conversation guide, not a checklist to tick off. As soon as a team starts mechanically going through the criteria instead of having a genuine conversation, it loses its purpose.
