MEDDIC and MEDDPICC: The Enterprise Framework
MEDDIC stands for Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, and Champion. MEDDPICC adds Paper Process and Competition—two factors that regularly cause deals to fall through at the last minute in larger organizations.
What MEDDPICC Assesses
- Metrics: the measurable success criteria from the customer’s perspective, not from your own product description.
- Economic Buyer: the person with actual budget responsibility, not just the day-to-day point of contact.
- Decision Criteria: the requirements against which the solution is evaluated.
- Decision Process: The exact sequence of the decision-making process, including all stages.
- Identify Pain: the central, business-relevant problem.
- Champion: An internal representative who actively advocates for the solution when no one from the vendor is present.
- Paper Process (MEDDPICC): the formal procurement and contracting process following the verbal commitment.
- Competition (MEDDPICC): the alternatives the customer is evaluating in parallel, including the option of doing nothing at all.
What MEDDPICC Is Suitable For
As soon as a case becomes more complex, involves multiple stakeholders, requires a procurement process with formal approvals, or exceeds a certain volume threshold, MEDDPICC is the right framework. This typically applies to the enterprise segment of tech companies as well as product manufacturers in direct sales with long, multi-stage cycles.
Where MEDDPICC Reaches Its Limits
Asking about eight letters during an initial discovery call can quickly feel like an interrogation rather than a conversation. MEDDPICC is too cumbersome for short, transactional cycles, and teams that rigidly apply it in such contexts slow themselves down without providing any benefit to the customer.
Application in the Quotaforge Qualification Stack
MEDDPICC forms the “Alloying” phase of our Qualification Stack: the transition that occurs as soon as a deal exhibits enterprise characteristics, such as multiple stakeholders, a volume exceeding €50k or a formal procurement process. In our 8-week program, teams practice in real time on their own deals, learning how to transition smoothly from SPICED or CHAMP in the early phase to MEDDPICC without the client noticing the change.
Practical tip: A qualification framework is a conversation guide, not a checklist to tick off. As soon as a team starts mechanically going through the criteria instead of having a genuine conversation, it loses its purpose.
