Qualification in the Partner Channel: Applying MEDDPICC to Partner Relationships
For product manufacturers with a multi-tiered sales structure involving distributors, resellers, and system integrators, the same principle applies as it does internally—only one level higher: Partners need the same or a compatible qualification framework as the company’s own sales team. Structured content on this topic has been virtually nonexistent in German-speaking countries to date.
What the Partner Version of MEDDPICC Assesses
The MEDDPICC criteria remain the same: Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, Champion, Paper Process, and Competition—only applied to the partner’s end customer rather than the manufacturer’s own. This is supplemented by a question that carries additional weight in the partner channel: Why is this partner prioritizing this particular case over all other manufacturers in its portfolio?
What the Partner Qualification Is Suited For
It is suitable for any multi-tiered distribution model in which partners report leads to the manufacturer or, conversely, the manufacturer passes leads on to partners. Typical issues without it: Partners report cases that never result in an actual sale; forecasts from partners and the manufacturer’s own sales team contradict each other because they use different definitions of “likely”; and partner reviews focus on past sales figures rather than the quality of the current pipeline.
Where Qualification Reaches Its Limits in the Partner Channel
A partner does not automatically know the manufacturer’s internal criteria. The key questions must be actively communicated and practiced in joint, not separate, reviews. Without this enablement, the partner version of MEDDPICC remains theory on the manufacturer’s side, with no impact in the field.
Application in the Quotaforge Qualification Stack
We combine CHAMP for initial partner discussions with the MEDDPICC partner variant for the actual qualification process and GPCTBA/C&I for ongoing partner reviews—the same “Heating, Alloying, Hardening” logic used internally, but applied to the partner relationship. A partner who delivers few but well-qualified cases is more valuable than one who produces many unqualified cases, even if the sheer number seems more impressive.
Practical tip: A qualification framework is a conversation guide, not a checklist to be ticked off. As soon as a team starts mechanically going through the criteria instead of having a genuine conversation, it loses its purpose.
