CHAMP: Challenges, Authority, Money, Prioritization

CHAMP reverses the classic BANT sequence and starts with the challenge rather than the budget. This changes the entire conversation because it first clarifies why a customer should take action in the first place, before money is even discussed.

What CHAMP Asks

  • Challenges: What problem is the customer actually facing, and how urgent is it?
  • Authority: Who is involved in the decision, and who must ultimately approve it?
  • Money: Does the available or obtainable budget align with the solution, now that the need is clear?
  • Prioritization: Where does this problem rank on the customer’s list, compared to everything else that’s also competing for attention?

What CHAMP Is Suited For

CHAMP is suitable for consultative sales in the mid-market, such as with software service providers that have project and proposal cycles. Starting with the “Challenge” step is a good fit for sales teams that see themselves as consultants rather than merely order takers.

Where CHAMP Reaches Its Limits

CHAMP doesn’t assess prioritization until late in the process, which can result in time being spent on deals that, while real for the customer, aren’t urgent enough to be decided this year. For enterprise deals with multiple decision-making levels and a formal procurement process, the depth of CHAMP alone isn’t sufficient.

Application in the Quotaforge Qualification Stack

We use CHAMP alongside SPICED in the Heating phase, especially with software service providers, where entering the process via a “Challenge” feels more natural than via a “Situation.” As soon as a case begins to take on an enterprise scope, we supplement CHAMP with GPCTBA/C&I for the ongoing customer relationship or switch to MEDDPICC when a formal procurement process emerges.

Practical tip: A qualification framework is a conversation guide, not a checklist to tick off. As soon as a team starts mechanically going through the criteria instead of having a genuine conversation, it loses its purpose.
